i'd rather not haul my laptop out on occasions where i just want to play midi files. i thought it be neat to get some sort of a little portable, midi player. something where i could sequence my tracks on it. it would be bonus if it could just record an entire midi incoming stream, of course. but that might be a little far-fetched.

i began looking around online for a little midi player. i found this minimusic thing, http://www.minimusic.com/, and was wondering if anyone has experience with it, or some other portable midi player.

i've posted in general instead of software because i am only interested in controlling actual synths, not softsynths. and i'm looking for something that is actually hardware to use in an otherwise all hardware setup.

What about a Kawai Q80? We bought one for next to nothing years ago, does what it says on the box.

+1

Look for the EX and make sure the encoder (the big jog wheel) is in good shape. Should be dirt cheap also and has neat muting functions for tracks which makes it pretty "live" friendly

<<< you can sequence the whole thing with just that, it has a reasonably good XG sound set (based on the QY700 soundset) and fx processor. it would play back most midi files and write to SMF for further editing on a bigger system. If you need an audio input for vocal/guitar, the QY100 is there. But the QY70 is smaller, have longer battery life and oftenly cheaper. Above all, the QY is a mature product that has been evolved over time. I found it to be solid enough for most usage. The tiny audio output sounds suprisingly good for a unit at it's size. as a bonus it's offer great phrases which will follow chord changes in realtime.

thanks for all the suggestions. i've used the qy10 extensively in the past. but i needed something more robust. i went to using my laptop. now i want to find a middle ground that won't require too much relearning of yet another sequencing method. that pocket pc program seemed like -- with a screen -- that it might be easy. but wouldn't a little hardware midi record and playback device be cool? that way, you could use your laptop (or preferred device) for complex sequencing, then just "play" it into the recorder as a song. then, you could play it back from the device for live use.

I used to use a Kawai Q55, it was cool cos you could play stuff direct from the floppy disc, without any loading time
